Mother’s Day Wish: Dogs Trust Seeks Home for Rescue Mum

This Mother’s Day, we're highlighting the mums in our care – dogs, who have reared their puppies and are now looking for families to call their own. Last year, we cared for 470 mothers and puppies in our specialist ‘Mutt-ernity Unit’, and while most have been lucky enough to find their forever homes, some of the mums are still waiting for their turn at a happily ever after.
Dora, a heavily pregnant five-year-old Golden Retriever cross, was brought to us last July, when she was found straying nearby. She was very thin, covered in fleas and so nervous that we had to carry her from reception to a kennel in the whelping unit. Just two days later, Dora gave birth to eight puppies, but despite our best efforts, sadly, one passed away.
Now that Dora's puppies have all found their forever homes, we're appealing for a patient, adult-only home with a garden where the friendly Golden Retriever cross can gain confidence at her own pace.

Karen McLoughlin, Canine Carer at Dog Trust Ireland, says: “Dora is one of the bravest dogs I have ever had the joy of knowing. She arrived into us in an awful state, and we believe she’d been eating rubbish just to survive, as the poor thing started vomiting up plastic and cigarette butts not long after we got her settled.
She spent eight-weeks being the most amazing mammy, but it’s only when her puppies got adopted, Dora’s journey truly began. She was too nervous to leave her kennel for weeks, but we worked hard with her to build her confidence. A month after first stepping outside again, we cried happy tears when Dora had her first zoomies! Now she’s ready to take the next big step in her journey and find her forever home.”
We care for hundreds of dogs like Dora every year, providing vet care, training, and specialist support for many dogs, including mums and pups in need.
This Mother’s Day, we are asking dog lovers across the country to consider making a donation to help us be there for more dogs like Dora.
