Early education and intervention are key to prevent canine care challenges from becoming crises.

Dogs Trust Ireland has welcomed Department of Community and Rural Development Minister Heather Humphreys to our rehoming centre in Dublin and the opportunity to join the Working Group reviewing the Control of Dogs Act.

Dogs Trust believes that to effectively tackle dog bites and dog attacks, preventative measures are crucial, as are the resources being made available to enforce them. Greater action is needed to promote and enforce responsible dog breeding, dog ownership, improve traceability and accountability of dog owners and the identification and prevention of early signs of aggression.

Early education and intervention are key to prevent canine care challenges from becoming crises. We would like to see more regulation around dog breeding. Dog behaviour is influenced by so many factors such as genes, the pregnancy of the mum, the early life experiences of puppies and the environment in which they are raised. We need to educate and raise awareness about irresponsible and unscrupulous breeders so that people can make more informed choices if they do choose to buy from a breeder.
